Back in January, Backlined Collective conducted a weeklong residency at the Toronto CMC where we workshopped 4 new premieres and 3 works by Toronto-based composers. We also served as guests at University of Toronto where we helped teach an improvisation course to undergraduate students.
In February, I travelled to Pasadena, CA to help with the premiere of Interstate Glitches, an evening-length work I wrote for House on Fire.
On April 12, cmntx records will release Oxalis Triangularis, the debut 3-album collection by Apply Triangle. Oxalis Triangularis stems from the resilience of artists to continue to create through a global pandemic. It is a testament to the flexibility and creativity possible through electroacoustic composition. Developed through a call for scores in the summer of 2020, Oxalis Triangularis (referring to a purple “false shamrock” whose scientific name is Oxalis Triangularis due to its triangle-like leaves) features 33 new works written specifically to be recorded in a fully remote setting. Over the course of three albums Apply Triangle not only showcases the innovative techniques of 33 living composers but also highlights the embodied cultural nuances inherent in each composer's style.
I have a track included in the recordings and it is already out for streaming. Check out the release and consider supporting this album if you like what you hear.

So I didn't realize I haven't updated this page since the beginning of the year. If you are reading this, sorry about that. Here's a quick recap of stuff that happened since February that I'm particularly proud of.
I collaborated with multi-instrumentalist Mark Stewart on a piece that premiered at Roulette in NYC back in April
That same piece made it into Stewart's gallery concert at Bang on a Can this year
I taught a summer course in music tech to high school students at NYU in July
I played guitar at the Montreal Jazz Fest
My album Geisslerlieder came out on PPR back in August
I formed a guitar quartet called Backlined Collective and we have played that album twice and presented it at a jazz masterclass at university of Toronto
I collaborated with Kyle Miller and Cotter Champlin on a release of a piano work arranged for 2 guitars
Much more happened too
Here's some upcoming things to look forward to:
End of January 2024 - CMC residency with Backlined in Toronto, featuring a string of shows
February 1st(ish) - I'm playing at a festival in Brooklyn
End of February 2024 - the premiere of a very big piece with House on Fire in LA
Spring - exciting Shutterspeed Duo stuff
and a lot more. I have to write like at least 3.5 hrs of music by mid-January and that's brutal. I'm gonna go back and do some of that now. Happy holidays and I'll see you next year.

Did a residency in Holland, played a great Montreal gig (below), playing an oud show in MTL and going to LA next

I'm going to the Netherlands.
Four composers have been selected for the Conlon Collective Residency 2023, the collective’s bi-annual two week artist’s residency with the Yamaha Disklavier Enspire in the MuziekHuis, Utrecht. From a total of 23 submissions from all around the world, the jury, consisting of composers from the collective, Boris Bezemer, Daniel Schorno, Christina V. Oorebeek, Roché van Tiddens and guest member Arnold Marinessen, chose the following composers:
Andres Quezada
Elisabeth Salverda
Erich BarganierFelipe Pinto D’Aguiar
The composers will spend two weeks creating an imaginative composition for the Disklavier and the results will be performed in concert on Saturday the 11th of February, in the MuziekHuis, Utrecht.

Long summer. Performed at the International Clarinet Association's annual conference in Reno, NV with Shutterspeed Duo back in July, attended two residencies at Avaloch Farm Music Institute in June and July respectively, was selected to present work and attend a masterclass with electric guitarist Yaron Deutsch at TIME:SPANS 2022 in NYC, and played a few shows in between all of that.
A few more shows coming up this fall, some new compositions to share with everyone, and really big plans for Spring 2023 that just got locked down. More about that later. In the meantime, pics from the masterclass below.

February 27, 2022
I recently collaborated with the Neo-Speculative pianist Stanford Cheung to realize one of his graphic scores. Here is what he says about the piece and you can listen to my interpretation below:
Working with the New York composer Erich Barganier, Stasis Study is a graphic score that uses a musical drone as the material for textural variation and invariance. By utilizing a single component of sonic material as the cut in space, sound cohabits personal transformations devoid of sonic relationships external to its inborn inherent process.
Deprived of external stimuli, the drone is prompted to collapse on its gravitational core to generate a fission of sounds and sonic beginnings. It is through the organic tampering within reductive and apparent insufficiencies in sonic material that an infinite textures can be inwardly conceived, comprehended and furthered.
The resulting effects through an element of collapse results in a drone that conserves its sonic blueprint refrained from invitational prejudice or aesthetical accompaniment. The conservation of the drone as an inherent material finds a conservation between content and form which are symbiotically present.

Forest Muran wrote an incredible critique of my latest album.
"With all of this in mind, what I find most remarkable about Barganier's A House of Last Witnesses is the extent to which it strays from its influences. Although, like much of Takada's music, “Bastards of Empty Space” emphasizes circular rhythmic gestures rather than melodic dialogues, there is more of a sense of dramatic progression in Barganier's work. The crunchy xylophone seconds shift positions, and we are affronted with contrasting formal sections, which take us out of any sense of suspended time. The music keeps throwing us back into an awareness of Chronos"

I have a new split EP with Cassie Wieland coming out and the official release has just been announced!
The creative process is a topic frequently elaborated upon by composers; from outlining philosophies or technicalities to listing structural procedures. in a (once-)blossomed place, the first in a series of DIY punk-inspired “split composer releases” from people | places | records, features two artists approaching intricate textures and timbres from the reverse face of a similar process, and with divergent results. Side A features two tracks from Brooklyn-based, Illinois-born, composer Cassie Wieland; who’s explorative, yet tangible approach to human interaction and everyday natural phenomena results in two successively intimate experiences. Both “Strange objects” and “Weeds” present the composer’s take on object/environment displacement; first in a purely electronic form, followed by that material’s physical transference to a percussion-trio setup. By contrast, NYC-based and Florida-born composer Erich Barganier’s pieces explore a harsher side of the ambient experience. Barganier’s internal anxieties are guided by unexpected combinations of Ryoji Ikeda-inspired noise, blues music and CB trucker radio chatter ("The Veneer Melts); as well as the evolution of ritualistic traditions (Калі Я Адкрыў Вочы"). Like Wieland’s intimacy, he is guided by ideas of displacement, later arriving in a completely different headspace on this collection’s reverse B-side. releases July 26, 2019 Pre-order here |

This talk will also address the laptop orchestra as an effective pedagogical tool as a STEM project in Hackerspaces and Makerspaces. Come check it out.

From Creative Loafing (Tampa Bay publication):
Erich Barganier brings the noise with his sound installation at Boyd Hill Nature Preserve for one week, with four speakers playing tracks that overlap and blend with the natural sounds of the park. I have been awarded a St. Petersburg Arts Alliance grant to create a public sound installation in Boyd Hill Nature Preserve. The piece will highlight the local flora and fauna of the region and will run from June 17 - June 24 of 2017. I am hosting an artist talk on the 17th and 24th of June in relation to the installation and will talk about how I designed the music using computer coding and the importance of nature in art.
There will be a performance that follows each artist talk where I will play new compositions with a variety of local musicians. Each concert will blend with the sound installation to create a unique musical landscape.

The show is being put on by The Cicada Consort at the University of Alabama.

This eight hour concert marathon of music by living composers is presented to support research of Parkinson's disease through the Michael J Fox Foundation. In addition to having many wonderful performers gracing the stage, we will also have an entire hall dedicated purely to a continuous stream of stereo electronic works.

Nebulullaby, featuring Fading Out, is about to release in December and in anticipation of the release, xname is hosting a music making workshop and listening party for the album. If you are in the London area at the end of November, take a look at it. Here is from the website:
After a short introduction, participants will experiment with different
instruments and techniques in order to create sleep inducing sound
culminating in a short composition. The field of lullabies, far from being
saturated, will be left opened for others to reflect and respond.
Selected readings will be delivered beforehand. Individual projects can be
discussed in advance.
Basic guidance available on aesthetics, electronics, circuit design,
physical computing, Arduino/Beaglebone/Gumstix, software programming
(Java, C/C++, PD) and DSP.
Simplicity is encouraged. Focus is the electronic lullaby. Electroacustic
pieces are also welcome.
Some materials will be provided but you can bring your own. You’ll take
your final track with you.
The day will end with a public presentation of NEBULULLABY, a small
preview from the upcoming compilation and the participants performances.
Saturday 28th November 2015
11h to 18h (with a lunch break)
